East to West Rickshaw Odyssey
Charity Ride 29 June - 26 July 2009
Eco Chariots are making history this summer, becoming the first rickshaw to make the journey from Britain’s most westerly point to Britain’s most easterly point.
Simon Etkind and Lianna Hulberthave cycled on a chariot from Lands End in Cornwall to Lowestoft in Suffolk, taking a circuitous 932-mile route. The couple broke the record, cycling 1500 kilometres, the 'Guinness Book of Records’ requirement of a minimum distance. The couple aimed and did complete their summer adventure in 24 days.
This remarkable rickshaw ride raised money for UK-based development charity Action Village India (AVI). AVI supports six partner organisations across India, who between them offer training and support to over 300 self-help groups. These community groups benefit the poorest and most disadvantaged members of Indian society.

Route:
From 29th June until late July, Simon and Lianna have succesfully completed a world record attempt to traverse Britain from West to East, in a pedal rickshaw. Their three-wheeled journey started at Land's End, Britain's most westerly point. Over four weeks, they meandered across Southern England towards Lowestoft, the most easterly point in Britain.
To set the world record for the longest rickshaw ride, they needed to cover 932 miles – almost double the distance between Land's End and Lowestoft. Hence a zany route which loops from place to place, linking the towns of Southern England in a zigzag constellation.
Every penny raised will go to Action Village India, towards rural self-help groups. They hope that journey sets a record, but, more importantly, that it raises significant amounts to reduce the unjust poverty that takes away people's choices, health and self-determination.
